Do all whistle register singers originally have vocal nodules like Mariah Carey?

Mariah Carey once said that she's had vocal nodules since she was a kid, those and the top range of her voice allow her to hit whistle register. Do all whiatle register artists originally have vocal nodules, if not what part of the vocal chords allow them to hit such high notes?
