What is a good beginner motorcycle?

I like retro style, good gas mileage, speed is not important to me, but agility is, easy to maneuver, hold up when stopped at a light, etc., has to be reliable and electric start with good brakes. It seems that there are a lot of good 'cheapish' beginning bikes out there with excellent style - Moto Guzzi, Ducati, Royal Enfields (new ones with EFI), even Honda and Kawasaki seem to be making nice new retro cafe racer style bikes - anyway, that's what I'm looking for anybody have any suggestions? I have never ridden before but the bug is biting me for some reason at age 43, probably a mid-life crisis I'm sure. Thanks!
